The Indian auto sector performed well in April 2023, showing considerable growth in all major segments. A total of 19,57,599 passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles were produced per month. Additionally, domestic sales increased, demonstrating a smooth transition to BS 6 Phase 2 Emission Norms.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reports that April 2023 saw passenger car sales reach 3,31,278 units, which is a record high for the month of April and represents an increase of 12.9% from April 2022. Sales of 13,38,588 units, or a 15.1% increase over the prior year, were recorded in the two-wheeler segment, which had a solid performance.

Sales of three-wheelers increased significantly, peaking at 42,885 units in April 2023. With this increase, April's sales numbers are getting closer to what they were before COVID. Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, expressed optimism about the results and emphasised the rise in passenger car and two-wheeler sales.

Menon stated, "April 2023 saw the biggest sales of passenger vehicles ever in April, with a gain of 12.9% over April 2022. In April 2023, the number of two-wheelers increased by 15.1% over the same month the previous year. In April 2023, domestic sales of three-wheelers came closer to pre-covid levels for the month of April.

According to Aggarwal, "All the segments—Passenger Vehicles, Two-Wheelers, and Three-Wheelers—posted growth in April 2023, compared to April 2022, which clearly suggests that Industry has been able to transit to BS 6 Phase 2 Emission Norms from April 1, 2023, quite successfully. In addition to other things as the monsoon season approaches, good rainfall can also support the auto industry's expansion.

It is important to note that no sales information was available during this time period for BMW, Mercedes, JLR, Tata Motors, or Volvo Auto. Sales increased in April 2023, which is a positive development for the sector.
